The MAIB is committed to providing appropriate benefits within the framework of the Motor Accidents (Liabilities and Compensation) Act 1973 to those who are severely injured in motor accidents and come within the 'daily care' component of the legislation.
The legislation recognises those people who require 'daily care' as a person who;
"Requires or is likely to require, daily care for at least 2 hours per day for an indefinite period, commencing not later than one year after the date of the accident:."
The statutory limit for medical and associated expenses provided for by the legislation is removed for those who satisfy the 'daily care' component.
The 'daily care' component of the legislation ensures that the MAIB adopts a lifetime care approach for the severely injured. This enables the MAIB to be actively involved in the lifetime rehabilitation of these people with the aim of restoring maximum independence.
As a strategy aimed at providing lifetime care to the group, the MAIB constructed 'group homes' and independent units in the north, north-west and south of the State for respite, short term care (transition) and long term care (accommodation is subject to availability and conditions). These homes were constructed to provide an independent lifestyle, but at the same time ensure that the personal care support required was available.
The MAIB has outsourced the management of these facilities to an organisation with extensive experience in this field. This ensures that an excellent level of care is provided to the residents of the homes.
